[Note this is a repost from our old blog circa spring 2010]

I had a chance to ask a few questions of Chevi, a very talented artist from Washington - you may know her work from the awesome covers for “Lolitabot” and “Disko Warp Meets Sakuma Hitomi & J-Girls”! Well, she’s created an awesome new character for the cover of our upcoming CD “Disko Warp Presents Anime Love Hardcore” coming out this April!

Pete: When did you first get into drawing? Did you start with manga-style art, or something else?

Chevi: I’ve been drawing ever since I was a little kid. I’d always been fascinated with the cartoons that didn’t quite look like the norm I’d see on tv, and discovered anime more closely when I was 12 years old. A friend bought me an Animage import magazine for my birthday, and I remember trying to mimic the style for years. And it pretty much just stuck. I love drawing those big expressive eyes!

You’ve created 4 characters for Disko Warp’s cover art so far - do you have  favorite?

That’s such a tough question, because I really like them all. But…I think I’m definitely going to have to go with Super Happy Beat Princess Lime, who was done for the Anime Love Hardcore CD. I had too much fun designing her. Lolitabot would be a close second.

Tell us a little bit about your creative process - do you make up a background for the characters too?

I have TOO MANY characters with different backgrounds. I do it with just about everything I create, even just a little. I can’t stop creating characters…it’s so hard, because then I can’t concentrate on older ones. I usually make the design before I decide on a background for them. And listen to alot of music while doing so!

What are some of your favorite things to draw? What about least favorite?

I LOVE drawing anthro characters. Because I love animals. Anything cute really, I can’t resist cute. Colorful bright things too! I don’t like drawing inanimate objects, it’s something I really need to work on. Same with males, I love making male characters, but I find them difficult to draw. Oh well, I’m always aiming to improve!

Tell us some of your favorite anime, both current and classic.

My first anime were Ranma 1/2 and Tenchi Muyo, so those will always have a special place in my heart. Currently, I’m into One Piece (just started it), and The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya. Also looking forward to the Macross Frontier movies!

I have to admit, I’m completely smitten with your character Whiskey Chicken. Want to tell everyone a little about him? :)

I’m so surprised so many people love him! It all came about in a live drawing session on Ustream. I started drawing a chubby little fat chicken (partly because my sister loves chickens) and then a good friend of mine pointed out he looked drunk, so I put a bottle next to him, and my friend named him ‘Whiskey Chicken’ and the legend was born. I’ve been considering merchandise with the little guy, so you might see something soon. ;)

Any words for Disko Warp fans?
